My Nippon, a photo exhibition in Kyoto by Micah Gampel all through August, but only on weekends at Hanagumo Bar on Miyagawacho in Gion Kyoto. All my photos were taken by my ketai (mobile phone) camera as I work and play around Kyoto and Osaka mostly. It’s my Nippon world, but I feel like the viewer, not really part of the parade. I think I look a little shocked and mystified by what I see in each photo. Please come and visit, in the month of August.

Kyoto Higashiyama hana touro lantern walk

The annual Higashiyama hana-touro evening lantern walk event will be held March 13-22 from 18:00-21:30 nightly in eastern Kyoto, between Shoren-in Temple and Kiyomizu-dera Temple. The streets and stone-paved alleys of eastern Kyoto will be lined with electric lanterns, and artistic illumination displays are presented at temples along the route. Creatively-lighted floral displays can be seen, and Maruyama Park becomes an amazing outdoor gallery of illumination art. This is not to be missed if you are in the area.

Strange hobby: Buddhist statues stolen from Kyoto temples

KYOTO — A man arrested Monday by Kyoto Prefectural Police on suspicion of stealing an image of a Buddha from a Kyoto temple has admitted to the theft of two other Buddhist icons, investigators said.

The suspect, 59-year-old vending machine repair company president Itsuo Abe of Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, was arrested on theft charges for the heist of the wooden 11-faced seated Kannon (juichi-men Kannon zazo) from the Kennin-ji Temple in Kyoto’s Higashiyama Ward.

It was revealed by police that Abe had also admitted to the theft of two other Buddhist statues from the Toji Temple in Kyoto’s Minami Ward and the Bishamon-do Temple in Yamashina Ward. Police believe he stole Fudomyo-o from the Toji Temple and Bishamonten-zo from the Bishamon-do Temple.

Greg draws a lot of pictures and is filling page after page with writing in English, Japanese and numbers. This is a family portrait of Mama, Gregory and Daddy, as if you couldn’t tell.

A car turned upside down on a jig and cultivated with moss. You don’t know when the automatic misting system is going to turn on, so that makes it interesting. Also, the gallery is only slightly bigger than the car.
