Amazing color-changing sky in Kyoto

posted July 16, 2010

We have had brutal rainy-season storms this week. This evening at dusk the storm clouds did something weird to the last bit of light. Sorry for the shaky cam; if you can’t stand it skip ahead to 38 seconds for the first color change and 1:20 for the second. I tried to go “Whoa! Whoa!” like the guy in the rainbow video… that was popular this week, but it was too little too late.

That really was freaky, wasn’t it? I was getting a haircut at the time at Sanjo Jingumichi and thoroughly enjoyed the show, but kept wishing that I was up on Shogunzuke with my camera.

I’m at a loss to explain the early colors, but I’m guessing the pinks and purples were related to sunset-filtered reds shining on top of the thin clouds, combined with the rich blue of the clear sky from their overhead.
That’s my guess. Saw a milder effect of the blue part a few years ago, but last nite takes the cake.

    “Double rainbow, whoa!” indeed

Wow, it’s great to go back and see that amazing picture you got from Shogun-zuka. I certainly remember that one, but was it really that long ago?
