Hiroko of Zappa, an Indonesian restaurant/pub off Kiyamachi between Shijo and Sanjo. I don’t know the names of Indonesian dishes, but it all tastes good and it’s got peanut sauce and chili sauce and tastes great with beer, so you should go there. From Kiyamachi-Shijo, go north past the old school, turn left on the street that borders the school and left again at the alleyway next to the red window. It’s down the alley about 30 m.

Very nice, I remember going to that place, very nice indeed…. although, kind of odd, traveling all the way from New Zealand, to have Indonesian dishes, rather than japanese ;)

Someone told me about this place, and that it was pretty good. Maybe next time I hit Kyoto… ;-)

I went to Zappa at least twice a week for two years, and would go again tomorrow if it wasn’t so far away! A little gem in a beautiful city.

Zappa is now closed and Hiroko and her husband Peter (German) have opened (June 2009) Sakura-Sari, a cafe (and German school) near Hyakumanben (Kyoto University area) that manages to combine German, Indonesian, Thai and Japanese cuisine. A few pictures on my flickr page.
