Then and Now: Shimabara district main gate

A century-old photograph of a Taiyuu and apprentices in their finery at the mon of Shimabara from this highly-recommended book by Kyoto Shinbun. Shimabara was the main pleasure quarters of Kyoto until Gion became more popular in the Edo Period.

    I’ve just clicked on the common theme of all these pictures of Japan I keep seeing – I couldn’t put my finger on it until just now. It looks like every surface, building and sidewalk has been scrubbed to infinite neatness and cleanliness. Is this a realistic appraisal?

    I think it’s more that everything is worn smooth from years of use. and rain, rain is good at that.
