Mo-An is a cafe and teahouse at the top of Yoshida-yama (actually a large hill) overlooking the city. Surrounded by forest (the name “Mo-An means something like “forested retreat”) with views of Mt. Daimonji to the east and downtown to the west, a quiet place for lunch. Handicrafts like blown glass and hand made papers/meishi/jewelry are on sale on a long table down the center.

Hey… I love all your pictures and i really enjoy reading you. Just a question: can you see the Fujiyama from Kyoto? And are there little pieces of paper wrapped on tree branches, are they prayers? See, i’m writing a book and a scene takes place in Kyoto, so, to be realistic, i would really like to know.

nils: Dang! I worked 10 minutes away from that for 2 years, and I’ve never been there… (I also lived two stops up the Eiden line from where you apparently live. Your blog brings back memories!)
Constance: No, you cannot see Mt. Fuji from Kyoto. And the pieces of paper wrapped around branches are fortunes (received by a “lottery” system from the local temple). When these fortunes contain undesirable predictions, people tie them to twigs or fences or other dedicated structures at the temple and pray that they won’t come true…

I must remember to find this cafe/teahouse next time I visit Kyoto. It looks like a great place to relax – a retreat from the hustle bustle of the outside world.
