Nils,
It is a great hike up to the top. The early morning after the festival I hiked with a few friends up to the Dai in your picture to collect charcoal. We met a lot of others on the trails and I came to understand that it is highly prized.
If you’ve never got, I definitely recommend it. The view of Kyoto is fantastic.

From where did you take this one exactly? also, is the version on the right cropped, or a different picture?

The pictures were taken from the northern end of Yoshida-yama near Kyoto University. The second picture is a separate shot, with the camera (Lumix FZ10) at full 12X zoom.
